Smart Tips for Spring Safety

February 24, 2022

As spring approaches, the days get longer and the weather gets warmer. While these are welcome shifts, there are things you need to consider to keep your home and family safe.

A security system can provide peace of mind. Whether it is keeping your home safe from robbers or alerting you to a fire or gas leak. You can monitor your home – inside and out – from your phone! A security system is a great asset, and there are additional things you can do make your home even safer:

1. Take Care of Your Yard

A well-maintained yard is an important security measure. Yards that appear neglected can signal robbers that no one is home. Also, make sure your fencing is in good shape. Fences that look saggy or are broken are targets for potential robbers. Neglecting your fence is an open invitation to people you do not want to welcome into your home.

2. Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning is a great reason to clear out the clutter. It is also a wonderful time to go through your valuable items and keep a record of what you own. Jot down serial numbers and take photos to make sure your list is up to date.

3. Time for a Change

While decluttering your home, maintain your emergency detectors by dusting with a dry cloth and check the test button. Change the batteries in your smoke detector and your carbon monoxide detector every six months.

4. Clean Outdoor Lighting

Winter precipitation and cooler temperatures can leave a dingy film on lights exposed to the elements. Even though spring means more daylight, cleaner lights are brighter lights, and brighter lights are safer. Consider adding lights along walkways, tree lines and hedges to help make your home safer and more attractive.

5. Prepare an Emergency Plan

The National Safety Council recommends every family have an emergency plan in place in the event of a natural disaster, like a tornado or hurricane, or if there is a fire. It is a great idea to have an emergency kit for both your home and vehicle.
